Targeted mainly at the Dubstep musician, Wobble 2.3 (which incidentally comes free with the Akai MPK Mini MK2) is a virtual instrument for generating Grime sounds and effects. The makers, SONiVOX, say at the heart of Wobble 2 lies a Spectral Morphing Synthesis engine for generating complex sounds.
This multi-format plugin which includes over 200 presets has a broad set of tweakable morphing parameters. There’s also a full-featured programmable pattern generator for precise multi-step morphing control.
If you’ve been looking for a plugin to generate unique gritty sounds for your breakbeats, can it truly deliver?
Read on to discover what it’s really like in this full Wobble 2.3 review.

Installation (Version 2.3)
For this review the 64-bit VST plugin was installed, but there is also support for 32-bit as well. Other than VST, the other formats you can choose from are: AU, RTAS, and AAX.

Getting the plugin up and running is a fairly seamless affair. Once the software is activated via the Pace iLOK Licence Manager, it’s all systems go. Included with the downloaded plugin you also get is a 30-page PDF user manual which can also be downloaded separately from SONiVOX’s website.
Interface
Wobble 2 offers up a nice uncluttered interface on all of its four switchable screens. The arrangement of the controls are neatly organised and there isn’t an overload of options you sometimes get in plugins. At the top of the screen there’s an ever-present toolbar that has the usual menu options, along with a handy output meter for keeping an eye on your signal level.
Located on the right-hand side of the toolbar is Wobble 2’s main menu. This group consists of: next / previous patch, MIDI Learn, program settings, and load / save (patches, pattern generator presets, and MIDI Learn configurations).
In the main part of the interface the arrangement of the morphing controls is reasonably laid out, however the controls for the two channels mirror each other from the centre of Wobble 2 so this takes some getting used to. From an efficient workflow point of view it would have been perhaps more user friendly to keep the controls for both channels in the same sequence from left to right instead of channel 2 being in reverse.
Everything in Wobble 2 is mouse driven which helps to quickly tweak controls. Unfortunately the fine-tune feature (holding the shift key down while using the mouse) doesn’t make that much of a difference. It slows down the rotary controls a little, but it isn’t nearly enough to get the exact setting you need.
The lower part of the interface has the addition of a virtual keyboard and practical features to control the volume, pitch, modulation. A nifty glide slider has also been added to create interesting smooth transitions from one note to another.
Flipping between screens is also easy using the four buttons located on the lower right-hand side; a nice purple glow shows you which screen you’re on which is a nice touch.
Synthesis Engine
According to SONiVOX, Wobble 2 uses a Spectral Morphing Synthesis engine to create insanely wild and wacky sounds that might even make the cones inside your studio monitors ache. In total the engine has two independent channels to play around with, each of which have their own set of tweakable morphing controls. The main controls you have available are: harmonic width, filter cut-off, resonance, and various LFO controls.
Factory Presets
At the time of writing, Wobble 2.3 comes with 225 pre-made sounds. This is a reasonable collection of factory presets to showcase the type of sounds that can be achieved. However, there isn’t enough variation to show off Wobble 2’s potential. You will probably want to create your own presets anyway, but it would have been nice to see more pre-made sounds with a wider variation to demonstrate how flexible the plugin is.
Main Features
In no particular order, here is a closer look at the main features on offer and how they performed when tested.
Pattern Generator
This is probably the best part about Wobble 2 and the most fun to use. Looking like an arpeggiator, this pattern generator is full-featured and comes with variable step and resolution control. You can have up to 32 steps with a resolution of 1 to 32nd note. Configuring these two settings is a breeze and is done easily by moving the mouse up or down (while holding the left button).
Looking at the top of the pattern generator, there are plenty of options – eleven to be exact. These individual controls cover both channels of the Spectral Morphing Engine. Each one can be switched on or off and a handy virtual LED light below each parameter tells you its state. It’s very easy to shape each one by simply drawing with the mouse.

However, there doesn’t seem to be any way to fine tune settings. The shift key can be held down which is great for duplicating settings from one step to another, but there’s no fine-tune option. For convenience sake a more finely controlled experience in the pattern generator wouldn’t go amiss, especially if your mouse is on the sensitive side.
Another great feature not to be overlooked is the note velocity and duration setting situated in the lower portion of the main screen. This option gives excellent expressive impact to custom sounds making them a little more professional.
Aside from the fine-tuning deficiency, SONiVOX has made the pattern generator in Wobble 2 super-easy to use, and there’s plenty of flexibility to satisfy your creativity when designing unique gritty sounds.
Intelligent Rhythm Control
IRC for short is another nice feature in Wobble 2 that ensures the MIDI notes you play are automatically played in-sync with your DAW’s tempo. In essence it is a real-time quantisation feature that inserts notes at the correct time – a late note is inserted at the next beat, keeping everything in time. Sometimes though as musicians we want music sequencing that’s a little off. To cater for this SONiVOX have also included a humanising setting that gates notes up to a 1/16 note off so playing doesn’t sound so robotic.
MIDI Learn
Being able to map Wobble 2’s controls to your hardware is a welcome time-saving feature. Just like other plugins you may have used, it’s a simple case of clicking the MIDI Learn button, selecting one of Wobble 2’s controls and then wiggling your desired hardware control to map it. Incidentally, you can also backup your MIDI Learn configuration settings so you don’t have to go through it all again in the future. This also sets up the possibility for creating different MIDI Learn setups too.
Multi-attribute Patch Browser
Searching through hundreds of patches looking for the type of sound you want can be a long-winded affair. Luckily, Wobble 2 makes it easy using a tag-based patch browser. Genre, colour, and character attributes are used to help you drill down to the exact sound you need. Any new patches you create can also be tagged to create good organisation in your custom designed sounds collection.
Onboard Effects
To add more atmosphere to your sounds there are three effects modules built into Wobble 2, these are: delay, chorus and reverb.
All of them are quite impressive in the amount of features they have and each module can be enabled or disabled. The tempo-synced delay module is perhaps the most feature-rich and comes with settings for low/high-pass filtering, feedback, L/R delay, mix and pan etc. Overall a great section to Wobble 2 worth tweaking to make your sounds more professional sounding.

Verdict
(3.5 / 5)There’s no doubting Wobble 2 is a unique plugin for creating perhaps the grittiest and harshest sounds you’ve ever heard. The main focus is obviously on the Grime and Dubstep genres, but even if you’re not into these specific musical categories there might still be mileage in Wobble 2.
The interface is uncluttered making it easy to create interesting sounds even though the arrangement of some of the controls could be more workflow friendly. Since version 2 SONiVOX has integrated a useful multi-attribute browser screen which makes searching for presets a breeze.
The Pattern Generator is probably where you’ll spend most of your time. With 32 steps of morphing fun you can create some stunning sounds at times. Free pitch and delay vst. With the addition of Intelligent Rhythm Control, keeeping triggered patterns in-sync with your DAW is a seamless affair.

But, as unique as Wobble 2 is there’s always a feeling that it can be limited in certain ways. A lot of the presets sound quite similar, and you can’t create a patch from scratch using your own sample content.
However, Wobble 2 is still a unique plugin that has the potential to quickly generate fillers for your breakbeats or used for standalone effects. And, that in the end could be the only reason you need to think about adding it to your plugin library.
